Summit League Championship Game Preview

South Dakota State (#2) will take on Omaha (#4) in Brookings, SD at 1pm on Sunday November 5th.  


2023 Stats:

Records

SDSU went 12-3-3 overall and 4-1-3 in the Summit League. The Jackrabbits were 9-0-1 at home.

Omaha went 7-4-7 overall and 3-1-4 in the Summit League. The Mavericks were 2-2-3 on the road.

OFFENSE


SDSU led the Summit League with 41 goals and 285 shots. 2.278 goals per game. The leading scorer for the Jackrabbits was Avery Murdzek with 7 goals and 4 assists. SDSU has 4 players with double digit total points, 10 players with multiple goals this season and 15 total goal scorers. Unfortunately their 4th leading scorer, Maya Hansen, is sidelined with an injury and was only able to appear in 7 games.


Omaha was in 4th with 29 goals and 187 shots. 1.611 goals per game. The leading scorer for the Mavericks was Sophia Green with 10 goals and 5 assists. She led the Summit League in shots, goals, shots on goal, and total points. Omaha has 4 players with double digit total points, 5 different players with multiple goals this season and 8 total goal scorers.

DEFENSE


SDSU led the Summit League only giving up 16 goals, a measly 0.89 goals per game. The Jackrabbit goalkeepers made 48 saves with a .075 save percentage. SDSU goalkeeper Jocelyn Tanner played 1,479:58 minutes and Emma Knack got to see 140:02 of game time.


Omaha was right behind them in 2nd place with 18 GA. Omaha finished the season giving up 1 goal per game.

The Maverick goalkeepers made 80 saves with a .0816 save percentage. Emma Konsmo was in goal for 1080 minutes and and Mia Reedtz Rehde Olesen played 560 minutes.

Recent History:


This season SDSU and Omaha played to a 1-1 tie at Fishback on October 24th.


Last year SDSU beat Omaha 3-0 in the regular season, but Omaha got revenge with a 1-0 win in the Summit League Tournament.

Road to the Summit League Championship game:


Quarterfinals


Omaha faced off against University of South Dakota in in Denver at Summit League Quarterfinals. They beat SDU with two late goals in the 83rd and 87th minutes. Goal scorers were Emilie Erland with an assist by Grace Ostergaard and an unassisted goal by Sophia Green. Mia Reedtz Rehide Olesen was in goal and made one save and earned the shutout.


SDSU had a bye


Semifinals


Omaha took on top seeded Denver, in Denver and pulled out a dramatic win in PKs in a back and forth game. UNO goal scorers were Alyssa Keller assisted by Emilie Erland and Regan Zimmers assisted by Sopia Green. Mia Reedtz Rehide Olesen was in goal and made 8 saves.


SDSU played Oral Roberts. After giving up an early goal the Jackrabbits answered with 5 goals of their own and ended up winning 5-2. The Jackrabbit goal scorers were Avery Leblanc, Landey Murdzek, Avery Murdzek, Kayla Anderson and Katelyn Beulke with assists from Birna Bjorndottir (2), Avery Murdzek, Katherrine Jones, and Taryn Hettich. Jocelyn Tanner was in goal and made 6 saves.

South Dakotans


Taryn Hettich, a freshman from Aberdeen, is the lone South Dakotan on either of these rosters. Taryn plays midfield for SDSU and typically comes on as a substitute. Tayrn had an assist, 9 shots, 3 shots on goal and 2 yellow cards in her first season at SDSU.

Taryn was a leader on some very strong Aberdeen Central teams. She was a First Team All-State selection twice and a Second Team All-State selection once. Aberdeen Central lost to Harrisburg in the State Championship her senior season.

The current forecast is 59 degrees and breezy, so you should just plan on making your way to Fishback to watch the game in person.
